Shake up in the Department of Foreign Affairs

Recently, a quick and unexpected turn of events saw Xadrya become the Director of Foreign Affairs. While being in power for around a month, the Director has already made a number of changes to the department and pursued a new policy, making the diplomatic front rather active over the month. The changes he made were broadly on three fronts, internal, embassies and treaties.

Building on the progress made by the previous minister, all the regions NWE shares an embassy with was assigned a diplomat. The increased interest in the department has led to the department having an excess of diplomats, which allows the minister to adopt a more expansive foreign policy. And the minister has done exactly that. Utilising the surge in interest, he has opted for a policy of expanding relations with UCRs, and for NWE to assume a more internationalist position with regards to the interregional affairs. This was accompanied by relatively more resilient changes in the department in the procedure of looking for new regions, and the process of approving them.

Building on the diplomatic policy, another area that received a lot of attention was the embassies. After careful consideration, the embassy with TWC was closed. This was based on the fact that the embassy was opened when NWE participated in the, now defunct, TFU. Ever since the organisation's closure, the ties were not improved on, and furthermore, TWC attained a more militaristic orientation, towards raiding. As such, the embassy was closed, and in its place, a few new ties are being pursued.

For a long while, while the region has established embassies, not much care was put into building those relations. As such, in order to change that, and to bring the regions closer, the minister explored the possibility of having treaties with regions that have shared embassies with NWE for a considerable duration. To this end, a treaty with NWI, Alvaria and TDR were initiated, with a few others being discussed. These treaties range from mutual recognition to defence, based on the region. They serve as a crucial first step towards building closer ties with a region.

With several steps already being undertaken merely a month into his tenure, Xadrya's administration of FA shows a lot of promise. However, it also has the risk of starting with a lot of work in the first month, while failing to follow up on them in the following period, which could be harmful. So, it still is rather early to decisively state if its a successful tenure or not, but the current steps taken are certainly positive.
